Have you ever noticed how complicated the media tries to make weight-loss and exercise for women? Before I took my understanding of exercise and nutrition into my own hands, I tried so many different fads hoping to attain the seemingly unattainable perfect female form.
Every source of information told me to try something else and if I had listened to them all I would be a carb and sugar free tee-total contortionist, with a penchant for Spanish inspired dancing, a love for laxative tea and monthly detoxing, running a marathon a week, undoubtedly severely confused and probably a little depressed.
But listen, changing your body and your life doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to be all consuming and it certainly shouldn’t make you feel worse than when you started.
If you have read my blog before you know that I am an advocate for weight-training. In my opinion, the physical and psychological effects of lifting heavy weights are far more beneficial than any other type of exercise that I have tried.
But why is weight-training so effective for fat loss??
In order for you to lose weight/fat, you must be in a calorie deficit. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue (it is where stored body fat is burned/ used as energy). More muscle requires more energy. With that in mind, it is obvious that the more muscle you have in your body, the more calories you will burn at rest and during exercise.
But I don’t want to look manly!!
Girl please, I know you want to look ‘toned’ but do you know what being toned is?
Muscle creates the shape of your body, you can’t get that defined look you want without building muscle and probably losing a little fat…and what helps you burn more fat over a 24 hour period?…..oh right yeah muscle, which you get from lifting heavy weights. You see where I am going with this??
As for looking manly… ladies you just don’t have enough testosterone in your body for you to get that bulky look, lifting weights is going to enhance your feminine features, not turn you into The Hulk! Trust me!!
There was a time where a women could exercise effectively and it be enough. Now you have to do what is fashionable. Well as Kim K will tell you, what is fashionable doesn’t always work. So why not give something tried, tested and scientifically proven a go…and then use your new muscles to punch all the fads in the face!!!
